MishMach-Charts 2015

That´s how kaput 2015 was of a year

29. December 2015,

ALEX MAYOR

Man of the year: Donald Trump
Argh! What’s he doing on this list? Sure, on one level he’s this unsubtle B-movie character playing a part from a Jerry Bruckheimer-helmed vision of modern politics. Politician as bloviating straight-talker is a trope that only belongs in the movies right? Yet after a summer where everyone assumed wiser heads would prevail, the Donald’s numbers have held up and half of his opponents have quit the field. His pitch, part Grandpa Simpson, part shouty car salesman seems hilariously off-key for the Obama age, and yet somehow he prospers in spite of all logic and the gravity of politics.
For liberals who thought they’d seen the last of the faux man of the people, shoot-from-the-hip bullshit with Bush’s demise, the amusement has quickly turned to a kind of slow-moving horror. Surely… this… isn’t… going… to… happen? Watch any of Donald’s egotistical rambling speeches from this year and tell us you don’t think politics in America is truly kaput.

Woman of the year: Daisy Ridley
If Trump is all ‘may the farce be with you’, Daisy Ridley provided one of the brightest points in 2015. To single-handedly become the conscience and substance of such a well-worn franchise as Star Wars is no mean feat. With great writing from Abrams and Kasdan, she delivered a deft and animated performance that made audiences care about the story for the first time since the early 80s. Daisy elevated this reboot with such skill and charm, and alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Taylor Swift, she’s proof that in 2015 mainstream pop culture does it best when women are centre-stage with powerful, meaningful roles.

Single of the year: …is kaput.
I love a pop song, me. But seriously, check out the shitshow of year that 2015 was for pop singles and tell me you’re not also thinking of crowdfunding sending Ed Sheeran and Calvin Harris into low orbit? The year in which “Uptown Funk” – one of the most bland and predictable, written-by-committee singles ever conceived – seemed to gain a new credited writer with every passing month, yet still swept all before it? Argh. I had to put “Walk the dinosaur” by Was Not Was as a cleanser everytime I encountered the Mars/Ronson horror just to remind myself the world was once splendid and colourful and mental. (Uptown Funk doesn’t even mention dinosaurs in passing… how f**ked up is that?). Must try harder in 2016.

Album of the year: “I love you, Honeybear” Father John Misty
The iTunes “playcount”… it does not lie. So if I was being honest I’d have to admit this year belonged to Taylor Swift whose “1989” I seem to have played an incredible number of times. A pop record with a lot of charm and crazy amount of hooks. But for sheer creative surprise and witty delight it would be hard to top “I love you honeybear” by Father John Misty who seems to have become a bizarre liberal-angst mirror man to Trump (check out Bored in the USA on Letterman if you don’t believe me). This character-comedy pop album seems to be helmed by a louche and cocky yet self-hating git. Yet under all the cutting remarks and bitchy observations emerges a man eager to bare both vulnerability and love. There haven’t been many other albums where I’ve laughed out loud and been stopped in my tracks in the same 45 minutes.
(Honourable mention: Floating Points’ debut album “Elaenia” was a beautiful slice of modernist jazz, a lost soundtrack to a year whose story didn’t deserve anything this wonderful.)

Konzert des Jahres: Sparks & Franz Ferdinand – FFS – 29.6.2015,  The Troxy, London
Concert of the year: Sparks and Franz Ferdinand – FFS – 29th June 2015 The Troxy, London
It shouldn’t have worked (collaborations never do), but this was a joyous, riotous meeting of like minds. Meta-pop with glorious hooks and sly lyrics, self-aware yet putting a whole venue on its feet, it was the best of Sparks and what Franz Ferdinand might have been. Rock and roll started as a youth culture and yet here, with a band in their forties and 2 men who gigged with the Doors in the early 70s was a night of music that seemed to have both feet firmly in the future. Let’s hope they do it again.

01 Good Series
„Orange Is The New Black“ …

Netflix kicked finally also in German the good old analogue TV-programming out of the box. Besides „Bojack Horseman“, „Master Of None“ and „Grace und Frankie“ i totally rigged this Knast-Hanni-und-Nanni-Version. Love „Orange Is The New Black“!

04 FESTIVALS
Immergut
As everybody with one brain cell left I do hate festivals: too many people, too cold, too wet, too hot, too less toilettes… But as someone booked me for this one I have to state: I lived it up like a superstar on that field.

05 Readings
Stefanie Sargnagel
I waited so long for this Mistress of Punchlines. And the reading at King Georg was even better as expected. Take this expectations!

06 DIE BÜCHER DER ANDEREN
Müller und Höhtker

I helped two books in their way to being published this year: Jule Müllers „Früher war ich unentschlossen, jetzt bin ich mir da nicht mehr so sicher“ (Knaur) and „Alles sehen“ (Ventil Verlag) of Christoph Höhtker. I am so proud, I did even appear in public with them (Photo on the right side: Andi Weiland)

Before some one stole my mobile I did make a photo with Martin Shitler on which he showcased his penis. I wish I would be able to rematch this one sober.

Grimes

Grimes

Highlights

  • CFCF „The Colours Of Life“
An album like an Eighties TV soundtrack, inspired by “Hand In Hand” by Phil Collins and produced on a Roland CR-78 drum machine. Sounds cheezy at first, but it is very good, really.
  • Korallreven
The electronic side project of Daniel Tjäder (The Radio Dept.) called it quits this year. Maybe it was for the best, judging by their second album from last year. But still, their Swedish balearic pop will be missed.
  • Vocal Folk
The innovative power of electronic music was poor in 2015. Even Arca sounded like been there – done that. Instead, beautiful vocals and classic instrumentation had a revival (see below).
  • Webseite: dubtrack.fm
Chatrooms with music on the side don’t seem to be a viable business model. After turntable.fm, this year plug.dj went the way of so many startups and into bankruptcy. A successor was already standing by, though.
  • Mikael Seifu
The last time Addis Ababa was on the musical landscape was in the last Sixites – with the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu Astatke. Now, Mikael Seifu is combining electronic music with Ethiopian influences and will hopefully release his debut album in 2016.
